"Junie B. Jones and the Stupid Smelly Bus" by Barbara Park

Park, Barbara (1992). Junie B. Jones and the Stupid Smelly Bus. New York, NY: Random House, Inc.

Illustrated by Denise Brunkus.

Junie B. Jones Series.

Junie B. is not new to kindergarten. She was just here for a visit last week and knows exactly what to do even on her first day. However, things could be made much better if that stupid yellow bus did not need to take Junie B. home.

Junie got to school this morning on that bus and the day was not too bad. But Lucille has informed Junie about the chocolate milk poured on your head by meanies on the way home on the bus, and now the stupid smelly bus is definitely not taking Junie B. home today.

When the time to go home gets here, Junie B. hides so well that a panic search for her goes underway. Junie B. is oblivious to this while she explores the school by herself and has some more adventures of her own. After some time, she finally realizes she is in quite a predicament! When she sees all the fuss with firetrucks, police cars, and tons of people out to find her she can't decide whether to feel relief, panic on getting in trouble again, or anger at being left alone! It's all the stupid smelly bus's fault!

Junie B. sure takes me back to my kindergarten days and my rides on a stupid smelly bus! All the plot is seen through Junie B.'s eyes and makes for quite a hilarious book that inevitably makes you feel for Junie B.'s plight. Barbara Park sure knows how to see through the eyes of a kindergartner. I love her use of this point of view with a perfect kindergarten vocabulary because it takes me back to when I was six years old! That is how accurately she captures the books excellent believability!
